The law for cats in England

Since 10 June 2024, every pet cat in England must be microchipped by the time it is 20 weeks old, and its keeper's details must be registered on a microchip database. The rule covers cats that were already adults when it came in, not just new kittens.

If a cat is found to be unchipped, the keeper can be given 21 days to get it done. If that doesn't happen, they can be fined up to £500.

Cat microchipping rules in England

Yes, indoor cats too

There is no exemption for indoor cats. And indoor cats get out more often than their owners expect: a door left open for a delivery, a window in hot weather, or a move to a new home. An indoor cat that slips out is often more lost than an outdoor one, because it doesn't know the area.

What happens on the visit

Before Tony arrives, keep your cat in one quiet room with the door shut, and other pets out until it's their turn. Tony scans your cat first to check there isn't already a chip, confirms your details, implants the chip, and scans again to make sure it reads.

The chip goes under the loose skin between the shoulder blades, the first place anyone scanning a found pet will check. The implant takes a few seconds; most of the visit goes on getting the details right, because those are what get a lost pet home.

Does microchipping hurt? What to expect

Kittens and litters

Kittens must be chipped by 20 weeks old. Unlike puppies, they can leave the breeder before that, but chipping first means each new owner starts with a chip in place and a number to register.

Four or more kittens are £15 each on one visit.

Common questions

Do indoor cats need microchipping in England?

Yes. The law covers indoor cats in the same way as outdoor cats. The only exemptions are a vet's health certificate and unowned cats such as ferals.

My cat is already an adult. Does the rule still apply?

Yes. It applies to all pet cats over 20 weeks old, whatever age they were when the law came in.

How much does microchipping cost?

Prices include the home visit and microchip implantation: £40 for one pet, £50 for two, £60 for three, and £15 each for four or more. Tony provides the relevant paperwork and explains any registration steps the keeper needs to complete. If you're outside our core area a travel fee is calculated from your postcode and shown separately — you'll see your full price before you provide any contact details.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. Tony comes to your home within our coverage area, so there's no carrier, car journey or waiting room for your pet.
