Every dog in England must be microchipped by the time it is eight weeks old, and its keeper's details must be registered on a microchip database. Puppies must be chipped before they go to a new home, and that duty sits with the breeder.
Keepers must also update the database when their details change: a new address, a new phone number, or a new owner. An unchipped dog can lead to a fine of up to £500.
When should you microchip a puppy? What happens on the visit
Tony scans your dog first, to check there isn't already a chip. Your details and your dog's description are confirmed, the chip goes in, and your dog is scanned again to make sure it reads before any paperwork is done.
The chip goes under the loose skin between the shoulder blades, the first place anyone scanning a found pet will check. The implant takes a few seconds; most of the visit goes on getting the details right, because those are what get a lost pet home.
Confident dogs often don't notice, especially with a treat at the right moment. Nervous dogs tend to react to being held rather than to the chip, which is one reason a visit at home, where they already feel settled, helps.
Does microchipping hurt? What to expectPuppies and whole litters
Eight weeks is the latest age for a puppy, not the earliest. Most breeders have the whole litter chipped in one visit in the weeks before the first puppy leaves.
Four or more animals are £15 each, so a litter costs far less per puppy than booking them one at a time.
Litter microchipping for breedersCommon questions
Is microchipping required by law?
Yes, for dogs and cats in England. Dogs must be microchipped by eight weeks old, and since June 2024 cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks old, indoor cats included. Keepers must also keep their details up to date on the microchip database. An unchipped pet can lead to a fine of up to £500.
How much does microchipping cost?
Prices include the home visit and microchip implantation: £40 for one pet, £50 for two, £60 for three, and £15 each for four or more. Tony provides the relevant paperwork and explains any registration steps the keeper needs to complete. If you're outside our core area a travel fee is calculated from your postcode and shown separately — you'll see your full price before you provide any contact details.
Can a puppy be chipped before eight weeks?
Yes. Eight weeks is the latest age, not the earliest. Most litters are chipped in the weeks before the first puppy leaves.
Are you trained to microchip pets?
Yes. Tony has completed approved PeddyMark training and holds a Certificate of Training & Competence for microchipping dogs and small mammals.
